ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (August 9, 2017) – The 6th running of the Grade III $250,000 American St. Leger at Arlington International Racecourse drew a field of eight runners for the marathon 1 11/16-miles event over the turf. Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey’s Keystoneforvictory enters this race off a 1½-length victory in the Grade III Stars and Stripes when the multiple stakes winner broke from the rail and waited well off the pace early before running down heavily-favored The Pizza Man in the final furlong. In March, the Mike Maker trainee shipped to Garrison Savannah in Barbados and ran third in the Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup. Undefeated in his last four starts in the United States, the 4-year-old colt by Shakespeare will again start from gate one with Julien Leparoux in the irons.

One gate over, Mike Maker will also saddle Grade III-winner Taghleeb for owner Michael Hui. Two starts after his win in the Grade III W. L. McKnight Handicap at Gulfstream Park on the Pegasus World Cup undercard, the son of Hard Spun finished second in the Grade I Man o’ War Stakes at Belmont Park. The 6-year-old will look to regain his spring form after finishing off the board in his last two starts. Jose Ortiz will ride from post two.

Wanye Spalding and Faron McCubbins’ Bullards Alley was just caught last out in the Grade III Singspiel Handicap, where he finished second by a neck at Woodbine. Tim Glyshaw’s 2016 Grade III Louisville Handicap winner has yet to taste victory in seven starts this season, but the 5-year-old son of Flower Alley will take a shot with Irad Ortiz, Jr. in the saddle as they break from the outside post.

Local connections Dundalk 5 and trainer Dee Poulos will send out Grade III Hanshin winner Crewman to contest the marathon race with Carlos Marquez, Jr. aboard from gate three. Glockenburg LLC’s Alpha Warrior is a winner over the turf and the distance likely will not be a concern for the Pavel Vashchenko trainee, who breaks in the middle from post four under Mitchell Murrill. Johnny Eason and owner-trainer Rafael Fernandez’s Tobias, sixth in this race last year, will try to grab a piece from gate five with James Graham aboard. Trainer Mikhail Yanakov will send out Olympia Star’s Stars and Stripes show-finisher, Applicator, who drew in gate six under Arlington’s leading rider Jose Valdivia, Jr. Rounding out the field will be Jorge Vargas, Jr. aboard Runnymede Racing’s Postulation in post seven, who is coming into this race following a win in the Cape Henlopen Stakes. This proved to be a good move in 2014 for trainer Edward Graham when he used the same race as preparation for Arlington Million winner Hardest Core.

The American St. Leger will be the first leg of a $300,000 guaranteed Pick-4 that will include the Beverly D., the Arlington Million and the Pucker Up Stakes.
